Drudge

From depths of dreams to wide awake,

As under pillow my alarm does shake.

With eyes still closed I fumble, until,

The button located, the alarm lies still.

Minutes later, I stand unsure,

I begin a stumble towards the door.

On autopilot I reach the loo,

I need not explain what then I do!

My eyes now open I break my fast,

Why is night so quickly passed?

Hair to comb and teeth to brush

Is that the time! I've got to rush!

On with my coat and a kiss goodbye,

My bus is lost, it speeds on by.

The next one comes, its quite a wait,

That's because, of course, its late!

Now I know that because of this,

My second bus I will also miss.

And then school kids will fill this bus,

So rowdy that I'll want to cuss.

It's enough to drive you round the bend,

When will this journey finally end?

At last we're there and I'm still sane,

Just cross the road and down the lane.

Another day, another 'dime', At least I got to work on time.

So to the 'grindstone' I bend my head,

Wishing I was still in bed.

The day is long, the work is hard,

I earn my pay, I punch my card.

And I think, it's funny how,

Time seems to move so slowly now.

With just half an hours luncheon break,

I don't know how much more I can take.

A pause to fill my hungry gob,

Too soon it's back on to the job.

At last my shift comes to an end,

My journey home I now can wend.

I flash my pass to let me out,

It's all I can do to repress a shout.

I trudge the path and wonder how,

The lane seems much longer now.

I feel each step with aching feet,

I'm on my way, my bus to meet.

This bus is hardly ever late,

Which is why so often I'm left at the gate.

Another bus, another slow drive,

My connection leaves just as I arrive!

Eventually I reach home, hooray,

Boy, it's been a tiring day.

Now for TV and later to bed,

But first it's dinner; its time I was fed,
