What makes a Pagan?

What makes you a Pagan in this day and age?

Is it magick or gods or belief in the myth?

Is it what you are taught, or learn by the page?

Or is it the honour you hold for your kin and kith?

If to work magic you choose, well that’s fine by me,

But it’s not the sole meaning I really must stress.

To be Pagan is more as you will soon see,

And claiming great powers does nowt to impress.

Now gods are a thing of personal taste.

Some have many or none, one or two,

For Wiccans their deities are a pair, multi-faced.

It’s all down to your point of view.

Now myths, facts and folklore, are the works that we read.

Don’t keep to one book, no matter how old.

Look well and listen then take what you need,

We search for our truths; we won’t just be told.

There are some who will teach us, for money they ask.

Whether by word or by writing, but where do you start?

To choose whom to follow is no easy task,

So weigh up their words, and go with your heart.

Don't feel that mankind can teach all that you need,

For man is not perfect, and often misled.

Nature will teach, if you'll but pay heed,

Take time and you'll find signs easily read.

Honour your gods, Nature, your family too,

Hold to your word, and the actions you take.

Respect yourself and give others their due.

Be firm of faith in the path that you take.

To be Pagan's not simple, as you will soon learn.

Does having no dogma mean an easy ride?

So many think this, their old faith they do spurn,

But from self-judgement, they find, they can not hide.

To be Pagan you follow your path to the end,

Twenty four/seven, its part of your life.

Not just for feast days and at the weekend,

You stick with it through good times and strife.
